A signed American oil on canvas by artist William Winner (c.1815-1883) group portrait depicting the family of John Davis Jones the contractor for the construction of the Academy of Music in Philadelphia erected in 1857. This unusual large painting depicts the comfortable domesticity and affluence of its subjects and is rich in iconography a persimmon colored drapery behind the mother and father suggests a theater curtain representing Davis best know commission, the column also represents his trade as an architect, the healthy looking children are beautifully garbed in the clothing of the affluent upper middle class. The boy in the lower left corner holds a hoop, while the eldest daughter playfully removes her father's pocket watch. Original frame of carved and gilt wood and gesso.
